Chapter 13

I wanted to speak with Limorva straightaway, but all of a sudden, the clouds opened up above and a summer storm began to pour. The elves dispersed immediately; it was like they just sunk into the ground or something. One second they were all piled around in a field, the next they were gone and I was by myself, getting soaked in the middle of the open space. I looked around but didn’t see a single sign of Limorva, or Mondromir’s father or cousin.

I sighed and decided I had probably spent enough time here for one day anyway. After all, I still had a ton of work to get done at home.

I pulled out my wand, cast a spell to protect me from the rain, and began the slog back to town. I was going to have to make the deliveries in the rain, and I wasn’t looking forward to that.

The universe, however, had different plans for me. I was halfway back to town when my phone binged, indicating a new text. I pulled it out and saw it was from Alex. He had identified the witch we had come across in Mt. Rheanier, and he knew where she lived. In the interest of cooperation he wanted to know if I was going to come along when he went to interview her.

I wasn’t going to miss it for the world.

Where are we meeting?

Spellford. Meet me near the main portal.

My old haunting grounds. There seemed to be way too many members of Las Brujas based out of Spellford for it to be a coincidence. I tucked that little thought into the back of my head for later and changed course, going for the portal instead of back home.

I felt a twinge of guilt looking at the time on my phone and knowing that I was going to have to get those deliveries in sooner rather than later, but this could be a big break to help me figure out who killed my parents. I wasn’t about to let the opportunity pass me by, even if it meant having to deliver a few hours later than normal.

I was going to have to stop putting it off and hire someone to help me out sooner rather than later.

The stress was starting to pile on, but I was so close to a breakthrough I could practically feel it. I pushed the thought of getting behind on my work behind me and raced toward the beach so I could meet Alex in Spellford.

I popped out from the main portal a few minutes later, stopped the spell that had been keeping me dry from the summer storm, and immediately basked in the amazing summer sun here in California. I loved summers here—I always did one or two classes during the summer semester when most people had gone home—and it was my favorite time of year. For one thing, there were far fewer students, and the ones who were here in the summer tended to be a lot more serious about their studies, which suited me well.
